Bill is in the process of creating a Solo Bass exhibition called "Invisible Design." He will debut this performance at the Winter Jazz Festival in NYC on January 7th, 2012 at Le Poisson Rouge. Bill is also in the pre-production process of composing music for a new album focused on Solo Bass and treatments for the Innerhythmic label. It's presently untitled, and will feature both acoustic and electric bass. More shall be revealed soon.

Bill has been traveling quite a bit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and is exploring new ways of freeing the creative process there. He's begun this process with a focus on a few artists, both young and mature. He's built a recording studio to house this exploration.

On Thursday, Bill Laswell and Laurie Anderson's River to River performance was a huge success. The two challenged each other as an improvisational duo for a packed audience that included legendary musicians like Philip Glass, John Zorn and many more. The New Yorker ran a pick for the show raving, "Anderson is known as the cool, spacy, cerebral type; Laswell is more of a firebrand, at home in fusion, reggae, even heavy-metal environments. This should be a fascinating collision."

The Bill Laswell produced Lee "Scratch" Perry record, Rise Again was released this month and Relix greeted it with a three-page feature on Laswell. Paste chimed in declaring that, "Rise Again is the Lee Perry record that his fans have been waiting for, and much of the credit for this rests with Bill Laswell. There's not really a bum track on the whole record."

Anil Prasad's new book Innerviews: Music Without Borders contains a broad historical overview of Bill Laswell's career, with an entire chapter that look at the evolution of Material, connecting cultures, the business of music, the difficulties of bringing global musicians into the USA, his relationship with Miles Davis, working with PiL and Motorhead, and much more. Prasad also conducted a brand new 2011 interview with Bill, separate from the book, that can be found at his Innerviews website here. Other artists included in the book include Björk, Chuck D, Ani DiFranco, Béla Fleck, Leo Kottke, John McLaughlin and Victor Wooten.

Bill Laswell's band, Material, will accompany Gigi on February 5 during a sold out 10,000 seat performance in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. It's Gigi's first home performance since leaving the country 10 years ago.

Here is a bit of an update on what Laswell has been up to of late. He just finished up his first 5.1 Surround Sound remix, getting to revisit Herbie Hancock's landmark recording 'Future Shock'; Look for it in early 2003 and don't be surprised if you see more 5.1 news in future. Next up he'll be remixing some of the Sony Classical catalog.
